About Shaver Lake, California

Shaver Lake is a census-designated place of 580 people in Fresno County, set at 5,627 feet on the southwest shore of the lake that shares its name. The community was once known as Musick Creek and Musick Creek Heights, and it sits 10 miles east of New Auberry.

The lake began as a working pond for the lumber trade, and both the lake and the town take their name from the man whose company built its dam. Today the community takes in Musick Creek, Musick Creek Heights and Shaver Lake Heights.

  • Named for C.B. ShaverC.B. Shaver founded the Fresno Flume and Irrigation Company. His company built the dam that formed the lake, and the lake and the town both carry his name.
  • A 65-mile flume to ClovisThe lake first served as the mill pond for the Shaver Sawmill. Water from it fed a flume that carried on for 65 miles down to Clovis.
  • Old Shaver flooded in 1919In 1919 the Thomas A. Edison Company bought the lake and made it bigger. The rising water covered the original town of Shaver. Today's Shaver Lake sits at the southwest end of the enlarged lake.
