About Millerton, California

Millerton began as Rootville, a mining camp on the San Joaquin River. Fort Miller was built to protect the settlers. It was named for Captain Miller, its first garrison commander. When the fort was established in 1852, the camp changed its name to match.

In 1857 Thomas Pleston ran a stage and the Rabbit-skin Express. His line went from Hornitos by way of Millerton to Visalia. In 1858 he represented Tulare and Fresno counties in the Legislature.
