About Shawnee, Kansas
Shawnee is a city of 67,311 people in Johnson County, in the Kansas City area. A mission to the Shawnee Indians was set up on this ground in 1831, and the town laid out here in 1857 took its name from the tribe. At first people called it Gum Springs. J. D. Allen made the first settlement on August 10, 1857, and on that same day F. Conant started a store facing the public square from its south side.
The young town quickly became the seat of county business. The first District Court met at Gum Springs in the fall of 1857, and all the county officers lived there. The county commissioners made Allen justice of the peace that September. A post office opened in July 1858 with M. P. Randall as postmaster, and that year W. B. Maupin put up a steam-powered sawmill and gristmill about 400 yards west of the square.
- Burned twice by QuantrillOn January 29, 1861, Kansas entered the Union as a free state, and the border war soon reached Shawnee. In October 1862 William Quantrill's guerrillas pillaged the town and set it on fire, and later they came back to do it again. Each time they burned thirteen houses. Shawnee, 35 miles from Lawrence, served Quantrill as a training ground for his attack on that town in August 1863.
- School in a meeting-houseShawnee's first classes met in an old Indian meeting-house in the spring of 1858. Rev. William Holmes had preached the town's first sermon in September 1857, but the Shawnee Indian Methodist Episcopal Church (South) had stood here years before the town existed. Shawnee's first real schoolhouse went up in 1866, by the square's southwest corner.
