About Shelburne, Vermont

Shelburne is a town of 7,717 people in Chittenden County, on the shore of Lake Champlain south of Burlington. Jesse Hallock and 64 other grantees received its charter on August 18, 1763, from Benning Wentworth, the governor of New Hampshire, and the name honored William Petty, 2nd Earl of Shelburne, who served as British prime minister. A mistake by the surveyors later stripped the town of much of the land its charter had promised.

Ira Allen ran the first survey, but settlers fled during the Revolution and didn't come back for good until the 1780s. On March 29, 1787, the town organized, and that same year it sent Caleb Smith to the legislature. Farming drove the economy at first: burning the logs from cleared land brought a potash boom, Merino sheep from Spain arrived in 1811, and by 1880 the town's orchards held some 17,740 trees.

  • Harrington's inn of 1796Benjamin Harrington farmed the ground where the village now stands, and in the 1790s he laid out the Rutland to Burlington stagecoach road, close to the line of today's Route 7. His Shelburne Inn dates to 1796 and is the oldest building left in the village historic district. Nearby on Route 7, the Lee Tracy House, a brick house of 1875 in Gothic and Italianate styles, went up for a local wool trader.
  • Steamboats from Shelburne HarborLake trade grew fast after the War of 1812. The Lake Champlain Transportation Company built a shipyard at Shelburne Harbor and launched the General Green, its first steamboat, in 1825. Ten more came after it, ending with the Ticonderoga in 1906, a 220-foot sidewheeler that still has its walking beam engine.
  • Shelburne Farms, 1886Eliza Osgood Vanderbilt Webb and her husband, Dr. William Seward Webb, created Shelburne Farms beside the lake in 1886 as a model farm estate. Frederick Law Olmsted shaped the plan for its 3,800 acres, and Robert Henderson Robertson drew the buildings. Since 1972 it has been a nonprofit education center, where milk from Brown Swiss cows is made into farmhouse cheddar.
  • Electra Webb's museumElectra Havemeyer Webb, who collected American folk art, started the Shelburne Museum in 1947. She gathered old buildings from New England and New York onto 45 acres near the lake, including a jail, a lighthouse, a general store, a schoolhouse with a single room, a covered bridge and a meeting house.
  • A steamboat moved overlandThe museum chose in 1954 to put the Ticonderoga on dry land. Workers floated her into a basin dug off Shelburne Bay and onto a railroad carriage, then in the winter of 1955 dragged her over roads, through a swamp and over woods and fields. She has stood on the museum grounds ever since.
