About Winooski, Vermont

Winooski is a city of 7,997 people in Chittenden County, on the Winooski River. As early as 750 CE the Abenaki lived beside its falls and called the valley Winoskitegw, the "land of the wild onion," which is why the river is also known as the Onion River. In the early 1770s Ira Allen built a blockhouse there called Fort Frederick, which also served as the store and office of his land company, the Onion River Company.

The fort never had to defend anything, but it made the land along the river worth more and drew settlers in. After the Revolutionary War, Allen dammed the river and put a sawmill at each end. By the late 1830s the Burlington Mill Company was using the falls to make yarn and cloth. The American Woolen Company bought those struggling mills in 1901, and the new growth led Winooski to break away from Colchester and incorporate as a city in 1922.

  • A campsite 5,000 years oldAbout 5,000 years ago a single family of Native Americans camped where the city stands now. Their campground is counted among Vermont's important archaeological sites, and other native people followed them to the falls in later years.
  • A dome over the cityIn 1979 the city studied covering all of Winooski with a dome to cut the cost of heating through the winter. It would have stood 200 feet high at the center, and gas and diesel engines would have been banned beneath it. The dome was never built, but in 2009 the city's planner was still defending the idea.
  • The mills closed in 1954When the woolen mills shut down in 1954, Winooski went through two decades of hard times. The comeback started in the 1980s, when two of the old mill buildings were turned into shops, offices and apartments.
  • A namesake in WisconsinIn 1846 James and Lucinda Stone left Winooski for Sheboygan County, then part of the Wisconsin Territory. They named their new settlement after the place they came from, and it became Winooski, Wisconsin.
  • Vermont's first Black mayorKristine Lott was the first woman elected mayor in Winooski's history. When she stepped down, the city appointed Thomas Renner to replace her, and voters then elected him, making him Vermont's first Black mayor.
