About Sherry, Wisconsin
Sherry is a town of 755 people in Wood County, in central Wisconsin. Government crews surveyed the outline of its six-mile square in June 1851, and in November 1853 a second crew returned with chain and compass to find and mark the section corners. Their deputy surveyor reported thick stands of maple, oak, birch and pine, beaver dams along the streams and dark soil suited to farming.
Settlement began in 1880, when Henry Sherry and a partner named Briggs opened a sawmill and a company store on Mill Creek, and workers came to stay. A school followed in 1881 and a post office named Sherry in 1884. The town was organized on November 10, 1885, took effect at its first annual meeting on April 6, 1886, and borrowed its name from the mill community, which was platted in 1899.
“the streams are fed by the swamp, and are subject to very sudden rise & fall”
- A lumberman from NeenahHenry Sherry never lived here. The son of a flour miller, he ran a sawmill in Neenah, and during the 1880s he owned mills all over the state: in Marshfield, Oshkosh, Park Falls, Vesper, Fond du Lac, Kent, Auburndale, Aniwa, Centralia, Mineral Lake and Milladore. At Sherry he and a series of partners kept the sawmill running, then built a planing mill beside it, along with a plant where workers made barrel staves.
- A school on a farmIn 1906 a group of Presbyterians opened the Northwest Collegiate Institute, a Christian high school, on 500 acres of farmland beside Mill Creek. Students who couldn't afford tuition could earn it by working the farm. The school stayed open until 1921.
- Two churches, a year apartSherry's Presbyterians came together as a congregation around 1900 and put up a brick church in 1903. The German Lutherans finished a church of their own the following year.
- A stage to BlenkerBy 1923 the village had a cheese factory, a hotel, two general stores, a garage and a real estate office. Because the railroad passed two miles away, a stage carried people between Sherry and the Blenker station twice each day. The Sherry post office served the community from 1884 until 1968.
