About Sigel, Wood County, Wisconsin

Sigel is a town of 1,017 people in Wood County, Wisconsin, and the unincorporated community of Eight Corners lies inside its borders. The town covers 35.5 square miles, and almost all of that is land, with water making up only 0.03% of the total.

The ground was mapped by federal surveyors long before anyone drew a town line. A government crew ran the southern edge of this six mile square in 1839, and a second crew marked the eastern edge in June 1851. That November a third crew set every section corner, pushing through the woods and wading the swamps with chain and compass, and the deputy surveyor then filed a written report on the land.

  • Named for Franz SigelThe town was established in 1863, in the middle of the Civil War. It took the name of Franz Sigel, an officer serving in that war.
  • The surveyor's reportThe deputy surveyor judged the township good and the northeast the best of it, with farming land and sugar maple, elm, ironwood and birch. The south and west he rated second quality, with birch, pine, soft maple and ash. He found scattered pine among the hardwoods but no heavy stands, streams fed by swamps that did not last, and level, somewhat stony ground with reddish stone.
