About Sigel, Chippewa County, Wisconsin
Sigel is a town of 1,132 people in southern Chippewa County, up from 1,044 in 2010. On January 3, 1863, town 28, range 7, was split off from the towns of Lafayette and Anson and became a town of its own, called Sigel. The Yellow River runs along its northern edge, across from the village of Cadott, and flows west toward the Chippewa River.
“The Surface in this Township is generally level and a fair proportion good fertile soil. It is well watered by numerous small Streams, none of which, however, afford any water power.”
- Surveyed on foot in 1849Crews working for the U.S. government first ran the outer lines of the land in the fall of 1848. In September 1849 a second crew came back and marked every section corner, tramping through woods and swamps and measuring by chain and compass. When the work was done, the deputy surveyor filed a written description of the square that covers the eastern part of Sigel.
- Named for Franz SigelThe town most likely takes its name from Franz Sigel, who held the rank of colonel and fought for the North in the American Civil War. The name was given when the town was created in 1863.
