About Sister Bay, Wisconsin

Sister Bay is a village of 1,148 people in Door County, on the Green Bay shore of the Door Peninsula. Its first settlers came in 1857, and they built a pier and a general store beside the bay. By 1870 the village had grown into a shipping port on the bay side of the peninsula, and James Hanson, born in Norway in 1852, was keeping a store there as one of its merchants.

  • Liberty Grove began hereThe first homestead in Sister Bay is the land where the Country House Resort now stands. In 1859 settlers gathered on that property and organized the Town of Liberty Grove.
  • The wreck of the MeridianThe schooner Meridian sank in 1873 in the waters off Sister Bay, south of the Sister Islands. Its wreck site is now counted among the village's historic landmarks.
  • A mill and a pierThomas Dimond, born in Ireland in 1847, came to Sister Bay in 1868. He became the proprietor of the village's saw and grist mill and also owned a pier, so the farms and the port depended on his business.
