About Sky Lake, Florida
Sky Lake is an unincorporated community of 7,226 people in Orange County, part of the Orlando metropolitan area. It covers about 1.3 square miles, and it grew as a planned neighborhood that developer Hymen Lake built in the late 1950s and 1960s. Within a few decades it had become one of the early integrated housing developments.
- A square mile of homesHymen Lake's first plan for Sky Lake set roughly a thousand houses at the center of a square mile. Shops and businesses were meant to line the outer edges, keeping the homes in the middle and the commerce on the outside.
- Integrated in the 1970sDuring the 1970s, Sky Lake integrated racially, which made it one of the first housing developments to take that step.
