About Smeltertown, Colorado

Smeltertown is a community of 88 people in Chaffee County, Colorado, just west of Salida. In 1902 the Ohio-Colorado Smelting and Refining Company started up a smelter on the west edge of Salida, and the work brought thousands of laborers to the area. Most of those workers settled close by in Smeltertown, and the company kept the smelter running until 1920.

  • A smelter from 1902 to 1920For nearly two decades the Ohio-Colorado Smelting and Refining Company processed ore at its plant west of Salida. The Salida Museum records that the smelting industry there gave jobs to thousands of people, and that most of them lived in Smeltertown.
  • A 365-foot stack from 1917In 1917 the company put up a brick smokestack 365 feet tall, the tallest of the smelter's stacks. It is the only one left standing, and the Salida Museum calls it the clearest reminder of the smelting days west of Salida.
