About Solon, Ohio
Solon is a city in southeastern Cuyahoga County with a 2020 population of 24,262. Settled in 1820, it developed from a farming township into a city with industry, residential districts, parks, and cultural institutions. Its town center preserves connections to James A. Garfield and the community's nineteenth-century religious life.
- Western Reserve BeginningsSettlers from Connecticut arrived in 1820, and the township took its name from Lorenzo Solon Bull, son of early settler Isaac Bull.
- Railroad ArrivalThe Cleveland and Mahoning Railroad opened its Cleveland-Youngstown line through Solon in 1857, contributing to the community's growth.
- Garfield's PulpitBeginning August 6, 1860, 29-year-old circuit minister James A. Garfield preached every other Sunday for a year at the Disciples of Christ church.
- Historic ChurchThe 1899 church at 33975 Bainbridge Road has housed the Solon Historical Society since the city purchased the building in 1968.
- City MilestonesSolon incorporated as a village in 1927 and became a city in 1961.
