About Somerville, Tennessee
Somerville is a town of 3,415 people and the seat of Fayette County, in the Memphis metropolitan area. Settlers were moving onto this land by 1820. Within six years enough families had arrived to incorporate the county's first two towns, Somerville and LaGrange, and Somerville became the county seat.
The town's name honors Lieutenant Robert Somerville, who served under General Andrew Jackson. He was killed in 1814 at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend in central Alabama. The Tennessee Encyclopedia remembers him as the hero of the battle of Tohopeka.
