About Oakland, Tennessee

Oakland is a town of 8,936 people in west-central Fayette County, Tennessee, and it was founded in 1830. Its main road is US 64, which runs 9 miles east to the county seat at Somerville and 32 miles west into downtown Memphis.

Early in the 20th century, Tennessee's biggest egg factory stood in Oakland, and so did a large farm that grew Christmas trees. Its fast growth came later, after US 64 was widened to four lanes in the early 1990s. Low taxes and a low crime rate drew newcomers as well, and the town's population grew by 417.8% between 2000 and 2020.

  • The oldest church in townOakland Presbyterian Church is the oldest church still standing in Oakland, a town founded in 1830. The church joined the National Register in 2002.
  • A town that spread westIn 2000 Oakland covered 3.6 square miles. By 2010 it covered 10.3, because the town limits had pushed north and south of the old town center and, most of all, west along US 64. That western reach runs 6.5 miles and nearly touches the Shelby County line.
  • Most building permits in 2007In June 2007, Oakland issued more building permits than any other suburb around Memphis, even though it had far fewer people than Collierville, Tennessee, or Southaven and Olive Branch, Mississippi.
