About Sour Lake, Texas
Sour Lake was first called Sour Lake Springs for mineral springs feeding the nearby lake. By 1850, those waters and local oil seepages had made it a health resort.
The town was first called Sour Lake Springs, for the sulphur water that flowed into a nearby lake. Oil was struck there in 1901, soon after the Spindletop find. Sour Lake is known as the birthplace of Texaco, which began as the Texas Company in 1903.
- Namesake abroadTexaco later named an oil town in the jungle of Ecuador after this city. Its common name, Lago Agrio, is Spanish for Sour Lake.
