About South Valley, New Mexico
South Valley is an unincorporated community of 38,338 people in Bernalillo County, just south of Albuquerque. The Rio Grande flows through the middle of the community on its way south, and its mail carries an Albuquerque address with the 87105 ZIP code.
Some residents wanted South Valley to become a city of its own, called Valle de Atrisco. They hoped that would keep Albuquerque from annexing it and raising taxes. Others feared the cost of paying for schools, roads, police and fire service once the county stopped providing them. At a special election on January 5, 2010, voters rejected the idea by 93 percent to 7, and South Valley stayed unincorporated.
- Pajarito's old trade roadThe Gutiérrez family already held land in the village of Pajarito by the middle of the 1700s. Between 1855 and 1859 the Hubbell family built an adobe house there. It served as a rancho where caravans on El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro could stop and rest. That road is now Isleta Boulevard.
- A store from 1868 to 1929The Hubbells also ran a store in Pajarito from 1868 to 1929. It was the center of trade in the village and served travelers on the old road. In 2000 Bernalillo County bought the family's adobe home, and today the Gutiérrez-Hubbell House is a county history and cultural center.
- Old Armijo School, 1914Atanasio Montoya, superintendent of the Bernalillo County schools, drew up the plans for this schoolhouse himself, and it opened in 1914 as the Ranchos de Atrisco District 4 School. Montoya nearly on his own pulled the area's country schools into the modern era, and Old Armijo is the only one of his buildings still standing.
