About Sparta, New York
Daniel Shays served five years in the Continental Army without pay. The Massachusetts uprising of 1786 and 1787 known as Shays' Rebellion carries his name. He spent his last years in Sparta, living poor on a federal pension and a small plot of land. He died here in 1825 at age 78.
Daniel Shays was buried in Union Cemetery in Scottsburg, but his first gravestone misspelled his name as Shay. The old stone had no room to add the letter. A descendant from Clarence Center led the effort to fix it, and a new marker was dedicated on August 12, 2016.
