About Sprague, West Virginia
Sprague is a coal town of 1,289 people in Raleigh County, about a mile north of downtown Beckley along West Virginia Route 16. The community took its name in 1902, and within a few years a coal mine opened here and gave the town its work.
- A coal mine opened in 1906The Cranberry Fuel Company opened its Sprague mine in 1906. The company named the mine for Phineas Sprague, one of the men who founded it, and the coal town that grew around the mine carries the same name.
- Inside Beckley, but its own placeToday Sprague sits right in the middle of Beckley, yet the city never annexed much of it. The community still has a post office of its own, with the ZIP code 25926.
