About Stanaford, West Virginia
Stanaford is a coal town of 1,215 people in Raleigh County, West Virginia. Its mining days began in the first years of the twentieth century, when the Piney Creek Colliery opened two mines here within two years.
- Piney No. 1 and No. 2The Piney Creek Colliery started mining coal at Stanaford in 1902, when its Piney No. 1 mine opened. A year later, in 1903, the company added a second mine, Piney No. 2.
- Named for Stanaford BranchThe community took its name from Stanaford Branch, a stream close by.
- 1,215 people in 2020The 2020 census counted 1,215 people in Stanaford, which covers 1.9 square miles, nearly all of it land.
