About St Johns, Arizona

St. Johns is a city of 3,417 people and the seat of Apache County, in the White Mountains of northeast Arizona. Navajo speakers called the spot Tsézhin Deezʼáhí for its rock formations. Spanish explorers later named it El Vadito, the little crossing, because the Little Colorado River was easy to ford here.

Spanish-American farmers had built a community by 1872. Solomon Barth had been passing through since 1864 with loads of salt bound for Prescott, and in 1873 his poker winnings paid for cattle and land at the ford. He started a ranch there with his brothers Nathan and Morris and renamed the place San Juan, either for Maria San Juan Baca de Padilla, its first woman resident, or for the feast of San Juan. Juan Sedilla raised a stone cabin in 1874, and Barth later sold out to Ammon M. Tenney, a Mormon, in 1875 or 1879.

  • County seat since 1882Apache County was created on February 24, 1879, with Snowflake named as its seat. Once voters held the first election that fall, county officials set up their offices in St. Johns instead. In 1880 the seat went to Springerville, but St. Johns won it back in 1882 and has kept it ever since.
  • Salem, founded in 1880Under Wilford Woodruff's direction, Latter-day Saints led by David King Udall founded a settlement called Salem just north of town on March 29, 1880. On September 19 of that year Erastus Snow moved it to higher ground. Udall led the local stake for 35 years and spoke for Apache County as a territorial senator. He died in St. Johns in 1938. His grandson Stewart Udall became Secretary of the Interior, and another grandson, Morris Udall, served in Congress.
  • A granite storefront from 1918Isaac Isaacson settled north of St. Johns in 1882, and as the century turned he moved his household into St. Johns itself. In 1918 he built a two-story store on Commercial Street, 30 feet wide and 80 feet deep, with local materials from his own companies. Genaro Acosta, a local builder, put it up and faced it with rough granite of many colors from a nearby quarry. The year is carved beneath its stepped parapet.
  • Fossils at Placerias QuarryIn 1930 two researchers from Berkeley's branch of the University of California, Charles Camp and Samuel Welles, dug dozens of Placerias fossils out of a quarry near St. Johns. Today the site goes by the name Placerias Quarry.
