About St. Johnsbury, Vermont
St. Johnsbury is a town of 7,364 people and the shire town of Caledonia County, set where the Moose and Sleepers rivers flow into the Passumpsic. As part of the New Hampshire Grants, the land was named Bessborough in 1760. Vermont granted it again as Dunmore on October 27, 1786, and settlers arrived that same year. Jonathan Arnold came in 1787. He was a former army surgeon and a Rhode Island delegate to Congress, and he had written that state's May 1776 act breaking with Britain. He and six other families built homes at the present town center.
By 1790 the settlement had 143 people. That year the first town meeting gathered in Arnold's home and chose the name St. Johnsbury, and the town organized on June 21, 1790. Real growth came later with the railroad. After the line from Boston to Montreal reached town in the 1850s, St. Johnsbury expanded fast, and in 1856 it took the county seat from Danville.
- Named for J. Hector St. JohnLocal lore says Ethan Allen wanted to call the town St. John, honoring Jean de Crèvecœur, a writer born in France and a friend of Allen's, known in America as J. Hector St. John. Crèvecœur is said to have offered St. Johnsbury instead, so the town wouldn't be confused with Saint John, New Brunswick.
- The platform scale, 1830Thaddeus Fairbanks was a carriage maker, working from a shop above the Sleepers River mills that belonged to his father, before he and his brother Erastus started an iron foundry. In 1830 he invented the platform scale here. Because it weighed heavy loads accurately, Fairbanks scales sold worldwide.
- Gifts of the Fairbanks familySt. Johnsbury Academy was started in 1842 by Erastus, Thaddeus and Joseph Fairbanks, and most local high school students still attend it at public expense. Horace Fairbanks paid for the St. Johnsbury Athenaeum, which opened with 8,000 books, and in 1873 added a black walnut art gallery under an arched skylight for Albert Bierstadt's Domes of Yosemite. Franklin Fairbanks gave the Fairbanks Museum, opened in 1891; its weather station has recorded from the same spot since 1893.
- Vermont's first air flightThe old St. Johnsbury Fairground lay south of town, where Interstates 91 and 93 now meet. The Third Vermont Regiment drilled there before it joined the Union Army in the Civil War. Decades later, on April 19, 1910, the fair hosted the first air flight in Vermont.
- Railroad Street rebuilt in brickRailroads to Boston, to Montreal and across the north of Vermont all met at a brick union depot on Railroad Street, built in 1883, and the street became the busiest part of town. Fires in 1892 and 1896 burned much of it. New brick blocks then rose north of Eastern Avenue, and together with the depot they form the Railroad Street Historic District, listed in 1974.
