About Waterford, Vermont

Vermont chartered the town on November 8, 1780, to Benjamin Whipple, under the name Littleton. In 1797 it took the name Waterford. The new name recalled the early custom of fording the Connecticut River here. James Adams, thought to be the first settler, was living in town by 1783.

Dr. Richard F. Rowell began practicing medicine in Waterford in 1825. He was the town's leading doctor for half a century. Four of his six sons served in the Civil War.

  • Why the town changed its nameThe first name, Littleton, honored investor Moses Little. Across the Connecticut River sat the much larger Littleton, New Hampshire. The town switched to Waterford in 1797 so the two would not be confused.
