About St. Mary, Montana

St. Mary is an unincorporated community of 54 people in Glacier County, on the western edge of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation beside Glacier National Park. The settlement grew up near the shore of St. Mary Lake and got off to a rough start, with 7 saloons running in the 1890s, before its post office opened in 1898.

Once Glacier National Park was created, St. Mary became one of its eastern gateways. Hugh and Margaret Black saw that park visitors would need places to sleep and eat, so they put up small cabins of a single room each, along with a restaurant and a place to buy gas. In the 1940s they built 2 motels, and their St. Mary Lodge was finished in 1952.

  • Natoaki, the Holy WomanIn the Blackfeet language the community is called Natoaki, which means Holy Woman. Its English name appears both as St. Mary and as Saint Mary.
  • Ten times bigger in summerOnly 54 people live here year round, but on a busy summer evening the crowd grows to about ten times that. Travelers fill the lodges, restaurants, cafés, campgrounds, two gas stations and a small grocery store, and Park Service employees live in a big housing area next to the village, just inside the park.
