About Stafford, New York

Stafford is a town of 2,424 people in Genesee County, east of Batavia. It is one of two Genesee County towns that sit in the interior of the county. Settlers arrived in 1798, which makes Stafford one of the earliest parts of the Holland Purchase to be occupied.

For its first years the land belonged to Batavia and Le Roy. In 1820 pieces of both towns were joined to create Stafford, which took its name from the town of Stafford in England. The new town later gave up some of its land when Pavilion was formed in 1842.

  • Once Transit Store HouseThe hamlet of Stafford, near the crossing of Routes 5 and 237, was once called Transit Store House. Its old center at the four corners joined the National Register in 1985 as the Stafford Village Four Corners Historic District.
  • Morganville and RoanokeMorganville, a hamlet in the middle of town on Route 237, north of Stafford village, was named for William Morgan. Roanoke, in the southeast corner along the Betheny-Le Roy Road close to Oatka Creek, was first known as Orangeburgh.
  • Three creeksOatka Creek flows through the southeast part of Stafford and Black Creek through the northeast, while Bigelow Creek also crosses the town. Godfrey Pond lies in the northwest corner, and Horseshoe Lake sits near the western town line.
