About the Town of Batavia, Genesee County, New York
The name Batavia comes from what the Romans called part of the Netherlands. Genesee County began in 1802 with this as its one and only town. Back then the two covered most of western New York. The Holland Land Company owned that whole region and ran its regional office from Batavia village, founded by company agent Joseph Ellicott.
