About Alexander, New York

Alexander is a town of 2,491 people on the southern edge of Genesee County, where it borders Wyoming County. In 1802 Alexander Rea paid $56.20 for 28.1 acres here and started the village that still carries his name. A year later he laid out a road heading north from the settlement, and that route is now Walnut Street and Route 98.

  • A town since 1812Alexander became a town of its own in 1812, when it was carved from part of the town of Batavia. It took its name from Alexander Rea, the early settler, and it holds a village of the same name in its south central part. A piece of the village of Attica also sits inside its southern line.
  • Alexander Classical SchoolHenry Hawkins, a businessman who lived from 1790 to 1845 and also served in the state assembly, founded the Alexander Classical School in the town. The school is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
  • Along Tonawanda CreekTonawanda Creek, which feeds the Niagara River, runs north through Alexander. Its branch, Little Tonawanda Creek, winds past the hamlets of Brookville, East Alexander and West Bethany, then meets the main creek beyond the town's northern edge.
