About Darien, New York

Darien is a town of 3,010 people in the southwest corner of Genesee County, southwest of Batavia, with Erie County on its western line and Wyoming County to the south. European settlers began arriving around 1803, when this land was still the southern end of Pembroke and went by the name South Pembroke. In 1832 that southern section broke away from Pembroke and became the separate town of Darien.

  • The Seneca's turkey placeBefore European settlers came, the Seneca people lived in this area. They called it O'sóötgeh, which means "turkey place." Locals pronounce the later name, Darien, as "Dare-E-Ann."
  • Farms that fed BuffaloDarien began as a farming town. Its farms grew food and shipped it to the growing cities nearby, with Buffalo among the biggest buyers.
  • Kings CornersThe hamlet of Darien Center grew up where US Route 20 crosses NY-77. People used to call the crossroads Kings Corners. Today Darien Lakes State Park lies just west of it, and Six Flags Darien Lake lies to the north.
