About Attica, New York

Attica is a town of 5,790 people in Wyoming County, on the county's northern edge where it meets Genesee County. The state set it off from the Town of Sheldon in 1802, and in 1816 it gave up part of its own land so that the new Town of Orangeville could be organized.

Tonawanda Creek runs through the northwest part of the town. The village of Attica sits in the north, and the hamlets of Attica Center, southeast of the village on Route 238, and Vernal Corners, in the northeast corner, lie in the farm country beyond it.

  • A village in two countiesOnly the southern part of the village of Attica lies in this town. Its northern part crosses the county line into the town of Alexander, in Genesee County, so one main street serves two towns and two counties.
  • A prison town since the 1930sAttica has been a prison town since the 1930s. Two state prisons stand south of the village: the maximum-security Attica Correctional Facility and the medium-security Wyoming Correctional Facility. The Department of Corrections is a major employer, and most of the officers who work there live in or near Attica with their families.
  • The uprising of September 1971On September 9, 1971, more than 1200 of the 2200 men held at Attica Correctional Facility seized the prison and tried to bargain with the state for better living conditions. Four days later, on September 13, corrections officers, state police and the New York National Guard retook it by force. In all, 43 men died, and the gunfire of those who retook the prison killed 10 hostages and 30 prisoners.
