About Sheldon, New York

Sheldon is a town of 2,367 people in Wyoming County, on the county's western edge where it borders Erie County, southeast of Buffalo. It was carved out of the Town of Batavia in 1808, and in its first years it covered far more ground than it does now. In 1811 part of Sheldon was set off as the Town of Attica, and in 1818 Bennington and Arcade were split away to become towns of their own.

  • Luxembourgers in 1835In 1835 a wave of immigrants from Luxembourg came to Sheldon and settled here, in a town that had been founded in 1808.
  • Town hall at Sheldon CenterThe town government sits at Sheldon Center, a hamlet where Centerline Road meets Route 77. It lies just east of the smaller hamlet that carries the plain name Sheldon.
  • Cayuga and Buffalo creeksTwo creeks drain the town. Cayuga Creek runs north through the eastern part of Sheldon, while Buffalo Creek crosses its southwest corner.
