About Wales, New York

Wales is a town of 3,009 people in Erie County. It is one of the Southtowns, in the county's southeast corner beyond Buffalo, with Wyoming County along its eastern line. It was split off from the town of Willink in 1818, and its settlers chose the name because the green fields and hills here made them think of Wales.

Wales began as a farming community, and woodlands and streams still cover much of the town. Buffalo Creek runs north through it, and the East Branch of Cazenovia Creek flows north across its southwest corner. Over the years town boards have worked to keep the small-town way of life that residents wanted, so most local businesses have stayed small and family-run.

  • Wally Schang's roadWally Schang played catcher in the major leagues from 1913 to 1931. Wales named Schang Road for him.
  • The Gow SchoolSouth Wales is a hamlet on the Aurora town line, at the southern end of New York State Route 400 where it meets Route 16. The hamlet is home to the Gow School.
  • Hunters Creek ParkMost people call it Hunters Creek Park, but its formal name is Sgt. Mark A. Rademacher Memorial Park. Erie County runs it through its parks, recreation and forestry department.
