About Holland, New York

Holland is a town of 3,281 people in the southeast part of Erie County, one of the Southtowns south and east of Buffalo. Its first settlers came in 1807 and built along the northern edge, a stretch people then called Humphrey Valley. In 1818 Holland was split off from the town of Willink, which at the time took in the whole southern part of the county.

The new town's name came from the Holland Land Company, whose Dutch investors held title to most of Western New York and sold the land off piece by piece. Willink, named for the investor Willem Willink, no longer exists as a town, but Holland kept its Dutch name, and so did the hamlet of Dutchtown in its southeastern corner.

  • A fire hall turned museumFire claimed many of Holland's original town buildings over the years. The old fire hall on Main Street survived, and it is now home to the Holland Historical Society.
  • A new school in 1933Students finished their Christmas break in 1932 at the old school, which stood where the town hall is today, and in January moved into a new centralized building at 103 Canada Street. The Harold O. Brumstead elementary building followed in 1960, and a middle school went up in 1973 at Partridge and Route 16. The Canada Street building now serves as Holland Junior/Senior High School.
  • First state title in 1982In November 1982 the Holland boys varsity soccer team played Mattituck in the state Class C final, and the game ended in a 1-1 tie. The result gave the school its first state title in any sport.
  • Tulips every MayThe town marks its Dutch name with the Holland Tulip Festival, held each year in the first days of May. Through the summer, from June to August, crowds also turn out for racing at Holland Speedway.
