About Marilla, New York

Marilla is a town of 5,189 people in Erie County, east of Buffalo. Its land, like that of neighboring Elma, was once Seneca land within the Buffalo Creek Reservation. Members of the Ebenezer Society became the first settlers there around 1827. The rest of the land opened to newcomers once the Treaty of Buffalo Creek became final in 1842.

The town was formed in 1853 from pieces of Alden and Wales. It took its name from Marilla Rogers, one of the early schoolteachers. She died in 1855 at the age of 38, only two years after the town began carrying her name.

  • Porterville's millPorterville, a hamlet in the town's southwest corner, sits on Buffalo Creek. It is named for Archibald Porter, who ran a mill there in the early days.
  • A hamlet from about 1829The hamlet of Marilla grew up around 1829 in the northwest part of town, beside Buffalo Creek. It sits where Two Rod and Bullis Roads meet.
  • The Marilla Country StoreOne of the oldest stores in town stands on Two Rod Road. It opened as the Marilla General Store, and people know it today as the Marilla Country Store.
