About Elma Center, New York
Elma Center is a hamlet of 2,851 people near the middle of the town of Elma, in Erie County, on Bowen Road. In 1868 Elma residents raised a building next to the railroad tracks and offered it to the railroad company for a depot. The company turned the offer down and put up a board shanty of its own, and that shanty was still in use ten years later. The railroad finally began building a new depot at Elma Center in 1878.
- A store in the 1868 buildingThe building the townspeople had made for a depot found a use of its own in 1878. That year Henry A. Wright opened a store in it, while the railroad's new depot was going up nearby. Warren Jackman wrote the story down in his History of the Town of Elma, published in 1902.
- A post office in 1878The Elma Center post office opened on April 1, 1878, the same year as Wright's store and the new depot. Eron Woodard served as postmaster when it opened.
