About Elma, New York

Elma is a town of 11,721 people in Erie County, southeast of Buffalo. Settlers arrived around 1827, and members of the Ebenezer Society were among them. When a local lumber mill needed a post office, a resident proposed naming it for a well-known American elm that stood where Clinton and Bowen roads now meet.

The Elma Post Office opened under that name in 1852, with mail coming in three times a week. Five years later, in 1857, the town itself was created from parts of Aurora and Lancaster, so Elma became the last town formed in Erie County.

  • Blossom and the Ebenezer SocietyThe hamlet of Blossom, in Elma's northwest corner, was the main home of the Ebenezer Society, whose members were among the town's early residents. Blossom's volunteer fire company, organized in 1872, is one of the oldest in Erie County. Elma, Jamison Road and Spring Brook have volunteer companies too.
  • The creek that named BuffaloBuffalo Creek runs west through the northern part of Elma, and the city of Buffalo takes its name from it. No buffalo lived here in colonial times, though several local farms raise them today. Closer to the city, the creek becomes the Buffalo River.
  • A Bills star comes homeThurman Thomas, the longtime Buffalo Bills running back, moved back to western New York in 2007 and opened Thurman Thomas Sports Training in Elma.
