About Stanford, Kentucky

Stanford is a city of 3,640 people and the seat of Lincoln County, at the southern edge of Kentucky's Bluegrass region. Benjamin Logan founded it in 1775 as St. Asaph, and settlers also called it Logan's Fort. During the Revolution, Native Americans led by the British attacked the small fort several times, but it never fell, and the name Stanford may come from "Standing Fort." The main street follows an old buffalo trail.

In 1781 Logan gave part of his own land for a courthouse. The county court kept meeting at Fort Harrod until Mercer County was formed in 1785, and in 1786 Stanford received its charter, among the first towns of the old Kentucky County, Virginia, to have one. A log courthouse opened in 1787, and the courthouse has stood on that ground ever since. It has never lost its records to fire, and its old vellum deeds include grants to Daniel Boone and Simon Kenton. The Lincoln County Courthouse joined the National Register in 1976.

“Stanford named and made county seat, 1786. Records in courthouse from 1781, oldest in the state.”
Kentucky Historical Society
  • A church from 1790The Logan family were firm Presbyterians, and Stanford's first recorded church, a Presbyterian one, went up in 1790. Baptists and Methodists didn't organize here until the 1830s. The old church still stands and now belongs to the Harvey Helm Memorial Historic Library and Museum. The town's library, started in the 1830s, took Helm's name in 1970 to honor the Stanford native who served in Congress from 1909 to 1917.
  • Kentucky's first garage, 1905The Civil War mostly passed Stanford by, since the closest fighting was at Perryville, 20 miles away. The Louisville and Nashville Railroad brought a line and depot to town in late 1865, and Stanford grew quickly after the war. The Stanford Banner began in the late 1860s and still publishes as the Interior Journal. In 1905 Stanford opened the first automobile garage in Kentucky. The tracks came up in 1988, but the depot has been restored.
  • The Male AcademyStanford's first school, the Male Academy, opened in the 1850s in a West Main Street building that is now Fox Funeral Home. A Female Academy followed in the 1870s. The Stanford School, founded in 1900, grew over the years and still serves the county as the Lincoln County Student Support Center.
