About Stanton, North Dakota

Stanton is a city of 368 people and the county seat of Mercer County, North Dakota, at the spot where the Knife River meets the Missouri. The town was founded in 1883, and when Mercer County organized the next year, in 1884, Stanton was chosen as its seat. It was incorporated as a village in 1909 and became a city in 1947.

“Near the present site of Stanton, where the Knife River joins the Missouri, Lewis and Clark discovered villages of the Mandans and Hidatsa.”
North Dakota: A Guide, 1938
  • Knife River Indian VillagesAt Stanton lies the Knife River Indian Villages National Historic Site. It protects a Hidatsa earth lodge along with what is left of three villages that their people later abandoned. Awatixa, one of the three, is believed to be the place where Sakakawea once lived.
  • The chiefs of Mah-har-haAn early history of North Dakota tells of a third village close to where Stanton now stands, called Mah-har-ha. Its first chief was Ta-tuck-co-pin-re-ha, whose name meant White Buffalo Robe Unfolded. Two lesser chiefs served under him: Neighing Horse, whose own name was Min-nis-sur-ra-ree, and Old-Woman-at-a-Distance, known in his language as Le-cong-gar-ti-bar.
  • One school for two townsIn July 2004 the Stanton and Center school districts merged to form the Center-Stanton School District. Stanton High School closed right away, and Stanton's elementary school followed in 2008. Since then, all of the district's students have gone to school in Center.
