About Star Valley, Arizona

Star Valley is a town of 2,484 people in northern Gila County, sharing its western border with Payson. It lies in the Rim Country at 4,650 feet, ringed by the Tonto National Forest, and takes its name from the valley that Houston Creek carved as it runs south toward Tonto Creek and the Salt River.

People have lived in this area for thousands of years, first the Mogollon, Ancestral Puebloan and Hohokam cultures and later the Apache, and the Tonto Apache Tribe still lives nearby. Ranching, mining and frontier settlement drew newcomers in the late 1800s. The community was long a census-designated place, then became a town in 2005 under the name Diamond Star and switched to Star Valley in 2006.

  • A park for Diane McDanielDiane McDaniel's dedication and leadership did much to make Star Valley a town, so its community park on Highway 260 carries her name. The grounds hold a splash pad, a zip line, playgrounds, pickleball, outdoor musical instruments, picnic spots and a ramada that families can book.
  • A garden since 2018In 2018 an empty town lot became the Star Valley Community Garden. Volunteers and donations built it up, and neighbors now raise fruit, vegetables and flowers there, with many gardeners giving part of what they grow to people in need.
  • Water in public handsThe town purchased the local water system from the private company that owned it, and Star Valley now runs it as a public utility of its own.
