About Stark, New Hampshire

The town was granted in 1774 under the name Percy, after Hugh Percy, Duke of Northumberland. In 1832 it was renamed Stark. The new name honored General John Stark, who wrote the words behind the state motto, Live Free or Die.

In 1944 an old Civilian Conservation Corps camp here became Camp Stark. It held about 250 German prisoners of war, the only such camp in New Hampshire. The men cut wood for the Berlin paper mills, and the camp closed in 1946.
