About Northumberland, New Hampshire

Settlers first came to Northumberland in 1767. They were Thomas Burnside, a member of Rogers' Rangers, and Daniel Spaulding. Governor John Wentworth regranted the land in 1771 and named it after Northumberland in England. The town was incorporated in 1779.

The New Hampshire Militia built Fort Wentworth here in 1755, during the French and Indian War. Its remains still lie near the Connecticut River, north of the ridge called Cape Horn.

  • An old landmark still standingIn 1797 the town voted to build a meeting house. Workers finished it in 1799, and the building still stands today.
