About Sterling, Georgia

Sterling is an unincorporated community of 2,534 people in Glynn County, counted as part of the Brunswick statistical area. It sits on U.S. Route 341, and its center is a few small churches and general stores. Children here are zoned for Sterling Elementary School, Jane Macon Middle School and Brunswick High School.

  • A stop on the railroadSterling once had its own station on the Macon and Brunswick Railroad, so trains on that line stopped in the community.
  • Miss Macon's schoolJane Macon spent forty-nine years teaching in the county's schools before she retired in 1952. Glynn County named a new junior high for her in 1958, serving seventh, eighth and ninth graders, and the school stayed on Altama Avenue for fifty years. Then in 2009 it moved to Sterling, into a two-story building made for 900 middle school students, across the street from Sterling Elementary School.
