About Stockholm, New York
Stockholm is a town of 3,816 people in St. Lawrence County, northeast of Potsdam, and the St. Regis River runs north through its eastern part. The New York Legislature carved it out of Massena with an act passed on February 21, 1806. Surveyors gave the new town its name, which links it to Stockholm, Sweden.
Stockholm kept all of its first territory until April 9, 1823, when the state moved a section of it to Norfolk. A second section went to Norfolk on April 15, 1834. The War of 1812 also thinned the town, because some residents left during the fighting and fewer of them came back afterward.
- Winthrop was once StockholmThe hamlet of Winthrop, on NY-11C beside the St. Regis River in the east of the town, first carried the town's own name. It was called Stockholm and then Stockholm Depot before it became Winthrop.
- Scotland, Bickneyville and South StockholmSeveral of the town's hamlets started out under other names. Brookdale was first called Scotland. West Stockholm, in the western part of town, was once Bickneyville. Southville, on NY-11B in the south, used to be South Stockholm, and Buckton, south of Stockholm Center, also goes by Bucks Corners.
- 3,816 people in 2020The 2020 census counted 3,816 residents in Stockholm, up from 3,665 in 2010.
