About Norfolk, New York

Norfolk is a town of 4,453 people in the northern part of St. Lawrence County, north of Potsdam. It was carved out of the Town of Louisville, and its borders shifted soon after, when some of that land went back to Louisville and a piece of the Town of Stockholm was added.

The first settlers in the town made their homes at the hamlet of Norfolk, which grew along what is now NY-56. The Raquette River runs east across the north end of the town, and the hamlets of Raymondville and Yaleville grew up on its banks.

  • Once called RacketonRaymondville, the hamlet north of Norfolk village by the western town line, went by the name Racketon in its early days, a spelling that echoes the Raquette River flowing past it.
  • Raquetteville became NorwoodThe community of Raquetteville took a small slice of Norfolk when it incorporated as the Village of Potsdam Junction. In 1875 the village was renamed Norwood, and its northern part still lies in the southwestern corner of Norfolk.
