About Louisville, New York

Louisville is a town of 3,050 people in St. Lawrence County, where the St. Lawrence River marks the border with Ontario, Canada. Nahum Wilson brought his family from Peru, New York, in April 1800, and they became the first settlers here. In 1810 the new town was carved out of part of Massena.

Its borders kept shifting after that. In 1823 nearly half of Louisville was taken to create the Town of Norfolk, and in 1844 Norfolk handed part of that land back. When Massena tried to claim a piece of Louisville in 1849, the attempt was turned down, and the town kept its ground.

  • Named for a French kingThe town is said to be named for King Louis XIV of France, yet people here pronounce it "Lewis-ville." The hamlet of Louisville, in the western part of town by the Grass River, went by the name Millerville before it took the town's name.
  • A river militia in 1812The first settlers often rowed across the St. Lawrence to visit their neighbors in British North America. When the War of 1812 began, the men of Louisville stayed on good terms with those neighbors but still formed a militia, and they chose Benjamin Daniels to serve as its "high sergeant." The militia kept watch over boats on the river, though its orders were to let Native Americans pass. After the war, townspeople and Canadians kept meeting in secret at night.
  • An island claimed in 1818Croil Island, at the town's northeastern corner in the St. Lawrence, was first known as Ile au Chamailles. Later names for it were Baxters Island and then Stacys Island, and only in 1818 was it declared part of the United States.
