About the Town of Massena, New York

Massena Springs held two sulfur springs, one hot and one cold, long prized for healing. In 1820, Army veteran Captain John Polley opened a hotel and advertised them. By 1858 there were three hotels, cottages, a bathhouse and a bottling plant. The resort's fame faded by about 1900.

Anable Faucher founded Massena in 1792, among the earliest settlements in St. Lawrence County. The Mohawk called the place Nikentsiake, where the fish live. The town is named for Andre Massena, a marshal of Napoleon.

  • How Alcoa came to townThe Massena Canal finally joined the Grasse and St. Lawrence rivers in 1898. A powerhouse began making electricity for the town in 1900. The power drew the Pittsburgh Reduction Company, later Alcoa. Its workers moved into the old health resort hotels.
