About Stone City, Iowa

In the 1880s, Stone City was a flourishing quarry town on the Wapsipinicon River. Its bluffs supplied fine limestone, and citizens put up a hotel and opera house of white stone. Portland cement arrived around 1900, and the quarries closed. In 1932 and 1933, Grant Wood led an art colony that summered there. Grant Wood had painted Stone City in 1931, and the picture drew nationwide attention.

The Stone City Quarries took that name after a post office opened there in September 1873. Before then they were known as the Anamosa Quarries. In 1910, some people who did not know the location still called them by the old name.
