About Stone Park, Illinois

Stone Park is a village of 4,576 people in Cook County. Its land was still mostly corn fields when insurance magnate Clement Stone bought up most of it, and the village that grew there took his name. Stone Park was incorporated on April 26, 1939, when it had about 50 homes and a few hundred residents.

The village kept growing in the decades that followed. By the time it marked its 75th anniversary in 2014, Stone Park had more than 800 homes and thousands of residents. Many of them had lived in the village since the day it was incorporated.

  • Cook County's smallestStone Park covers just 0.34 square miles, all of it land, according to the 2010 census. No other incorporated community in Cook County takes up less ground.
  • A lawsuit over a strip clubA strip club developer took Stone Park to court in 2010, saying village officials had demanded cash and a cut of the club before they would approve it. The mayor said fighting the case would cost $500,000, so the village settled. As part of the deal it repealed or rewrote some ordinances, among them a rule keeping adult businesses 1,000 feet from schools, parks, churches and homes.
  • A strip club kept outThe club, named Get It, was planned for the lot beside a convent. In 2013 the neighbors joined the Missionary Sisters of St. Charles Borromeo Scalabrinians in celebrating, because together they had stopped it from ever opening.
  • Firefighters from Melrose ParkAfter an attempt to unionize failed in 2020, Stone Park handed its fire protection to neighboring Melrose Park. That made it one of the American municipalities with no fire department of its own.
