About Berkeley, Illinois
Berkeley is a Cook County village shaped by farming, rail travel, and postwar residential growth. Settlers of German and Dutch heritage began arriving around 1835, and the community incorporated in 1924. The 2020 census recorded 5,338 residents, while Metra's Union Pacific West Line connects the village with Chicago and Elburn.
- First Farm SettlementsGerman and Dutch farmers began settling the area around 1835, working farms that ranged from 40 to 160 acres.
- Sunnyside School RootsLocal farm families established the one-room Sunnyside school in 1848; Sunnyside Elementary School still operates in a newer, larger building.
- Rail Service ArrivesThe Chicago, Aurora & Elgin interurban began serving Berkeley passengers in 1902, before residential subdivisions were created in 1908 and 1914 to 1915.
- Postwar ExpansionBerkeley's population rose from 1,882 in 1950 to 5,792 in 1960, even as Interstate 290 construction removed some homes.
- Prairie Path LegacyAfter interurban passenger trains ended in 1957, the former route through Berkeley was preserved as the Prairie Path for bicyclists.
