About Westchester, Illinois

Westchester is a village of 16,892 people in Cook County, a western suburb of Chicago on the DuPage County line. German farmers worked its prairie soil in the 19th century, and in 1852 nine settlers bought 40 acres where Cermak and Wolf Roads now meet.

Samuel Insull bought the land in 1924. He planned to fill it with homes laid out like a town in England, so the village and most of its streets carry English names. The Great Depression held back building in the 1930s, though people kept moving in. Growth picked up because the Garfield Park rapid transit line from Chicago ended here, until that extension was taken out in 1951.

  • Wolf Road PrairieHomes and stores now cover nearly all of the village's open land. The one exception is Wolf Road Prairie, 85 protected acres. No larger piece of black-soil prairie survives anywhere east of the Mississippi River.
  • Expressways after 1956In 1956 the federal government started building the Interstate Highway System, and I-290 and I-294 were soon built close to Westchester. The new roads made it easy for residents to drive around the region. They also cut the village off from some of its neighbors.
  • Five towers at Wolf and CermakWestbrook Corporate Center went up at Wolf Road and Cermak Road in 1986 and was renovated in 1996. Its five 10-story towers hold more than 1 million square feet of offices. For 2000/2001 it was named the BOMA International Office Building of the Year.
  • A village pool since 1977The John J. Sinde Community Swimming Pool was dedicated with a ribbon cutting on June 5, 1977, and opened to swimmers on June 11, 1977. It has a 50-meter pool, a 12-foot diving well and a water slide that stands 25 feet high and runs 150 feet long.
