About Strawberry Hill, Kansas
The neighborhood was first known as Splitlog's Hill. Mathias Splitlog, a wealthy member of the Cayuga tribe, bought this land in 1870 and hoped to build a grand manor. After he died, his daughters sold off parcels. Irish, German, Croatian and Slovene immigrants then filled the hill.
The 1918 flu pandemic hit the hill hard and left many children without parents. St. John the Baptist parish answered by opening an orphanage inside a former saloon. That orphanage stayed open for several decades.
