About Stryker, Montana

Stryker is a community of 25 people in Lincoln County, on U.S. Route 93 about 20 miles southeast of Eureka. It took its name from homesteaders who lived nearby, and it got its start as a stage station on the trail between Kalispell and Fort Steele, British Columbia. Later the Great Northern Railway moved its main line off the old route through Columbia Falls and onto a new one to Rexford, and the new tracks ran close to the stage stop. When the line was done, the railroad built a depot at Stryker, and a man named Frank opened a store and a post office near it.

  • Fresh trout for the OrientalTravelers didn't stop at Stryker for the scenery. Every day the eastbound Oriental train slowed here to collect a package of fresh trout raised at a local hatchery, and the fish went on to the dining car to feed the passengers.
  • Fire in 1926In 1926 a forest fire burned through Stryker. The town kept its railroad depot for years afterward, until the building of Libby Dam brought the depot's closing.
  • On the divideStryker sits just south of a divide between two river systems. The Stillwater River runs past the east side of town and flows southeast to the Flathead River, while Summit Creek flows northwest into the Tobacco River watershed and on to the Kootenai River.
